How to Forge a Great .COM

Picking a domain name doesn’t have to be difficult. There are a lot of domains parked and registered out there, but there are still plenty of names available. We have some strategies for coming up with the perfect name.

If you are trying to come up with a new name entirely, think of it like a product name. Now think of what you are trying to do with your domain, what is the content about? From there, use a technique called mind-mapping to dump all of those ideas down on paper and start formulating new ideas by pairing things together. For example, if you are planning to start a blog about AI, you can start by listing all of the things that are associated with AI, for example, supercomputer, deep learning, and neural networks. Now expand those words into things that they make you think of — neural network makes me think of Commander Data from Star Trek, who is an android, and Commander Data makes me think of big data. Deep learning randomly makes me think of 20 Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, which in turn, makes me think of researchers in a capsule at the bottom of the ocean. So lets capture those thoughts. Now we can look at combining ideas…neuralandroid.com, waterproofdata.com, ai-capsule.com or maybe even soggysuperpc.com. This method will provide you with an endless supply of ideas that you can keep combining until you find the one that calls to you. And to further illustrate the success rate of this technique, as of writing this, all 4 of those domain names are available.

If you have a brand name already, try it out and see if its available. If the brand name itself is already taken, you can try adding a verb to the front of your name, like gotomybrand.com or buymybrand.com. You could also try adding an adjective to the end, for example, mybranddevelopment.com or mybranddogfood.com.

The most important aspect of your domain is for it to be memorable, short and sweet. So considering the examples above, if your brand name is long, try abbreviating it or making an acronym.

Bottom line, picking a domain name may seem daunting, but it’s not quite as hard as it seems.
